A week in hockey
Monday, 26 July 2010 08:04

During the week our junior sides recorded 2 wins and a loss. U10 Cougars were way understaffed, missing 5 regular players due to school camps and illness. Sophie from wildcats helped out and the team recorded a 6-1 victory. Jayden, Will and Luke bagged a double each. The team remains unbeaten. U10 Wildcats had a handy 5-0 victory to move into the top 4. Not sure on the goal scorers, but coach Jason was very happy with his teams efforts. U13's found the going tough and went down 5-2 to Royals. Bailey and Jordan scored the goals either side of half time.

Our seniors saw both 4th and 6th Grades in action. 3rd grade had the weekend off.

4ths took on competition leaders Colts and defended well for 33 minutes of the first half before Colts finally snatched a goal from a PC. Stopped by Scott on the line, the ball fell favourably to the post man who convertted. Some reshuffle of the forward pack for the secodn half saw the Hornets play betetr hockey and the lions share of possession and opportunities but they coyuldnt find a way beyond the Colts keeper who was inspirational. a late goal to Colts saw them clinch it 2-0.

6ths had another double header. Firstly on Saturday they drew 1-1 with Maitland White at Maitlands home ground. The Hornets fought hard and Paul H was rewarded for some enterprising hockey with a goal. Then Sunday arvo the team took on Maitland in Newcastle. Maitland were coming 3rd and one of the strongest teams in the comp, but Port fired and recorded a handy 2-1 victory. Paul H got both goals and Maitland managed to score off the last play of the day. Great win boys!!!!!

1sts go top
Monday, 19 July 2010 09:11

After the weekends round of hockey action, our 1sts find themselves sitting top of the competition ladder after they defeated 4th placed Tigers 2-0 and the top 2 teams Souths and Crusaders drew 1-1 with each other. 1st, 2nd and 3rd now sit on equal points, with our lads on top courtesy of a superior goal difference.

Anyways, goals to Baxter and Stocksy in the second half was enough to see off the Tigers team who had caused us so much trouble way back in round 4. Was a solid effort by the team, with Tigers rarely threatening the Hornets defensive circle. The midfield was again the dominant force in the match.

4th Grade were outplayed by tigers across the paddock, given a lesson in team hockey. 4-0 down but still fighting for that top 4 spot.

6ths had 2 games. Friday night they went down 5-3 to Crusaders, with the team playiong one of thier best games this season. Goals to Keith and a brace to Jason wasnt enough as Crusaders scored 2 late in the game to secure the victory. Then on sunday the team fought out a 3-3 draw with Tigers Black, Tim the Pom getting a hattrick of goals. The team sits mid table and with another double header to look forward to this weekend.

Top team soldiers on

3rd Grade was the only club team to take the field on the weekend, due to school holidays and the U13 Junior state ttiles at Newcastle.

Anyways it was a top of the ladder clash, 1st v 2nd, Souths v Port. It doesnt get much better then this. The game was scheduled for the South field which is still quite slippery and bouncy and not really suitable for high level hockey but it is improving on a week by week basis. The team took the field and were immediately under pressure by a souths team who came out hard. They managed to score a goal but the the Hornets style took over and the side created a host of chances but couldnt find a way to goal.

Second half was much the same, a lot of one way traffic by the Hornets but the final touch or the shot selection was off, and the team couldnt convert its chances. with 10 mins to go a play down the right saw Grayden finding Baxter who snuck around the defence and slotted a ball across into the bottom left of the goal.

Despite a couple more chances, Port couldnt find the winner and it ended 1-1. The result sees the top 4 teams now just 3 points from 1st to 4th, and this seasons 3rd Grade NMHA competition is one of the closest and most skilled in recent years.
