Well the Hornets had another unbeaten weekend in the NMHA competition. But the Presidents Keg remains safe again as all 3 teams failed to secure maximum points. but a good weekend none the less. 6th Grade started the day against University, looking to continue thier recent run of good form. It began well when 'White Lightning' Keith scored his 9th of the season. He was able to slot home a nice shot after some comical lead up work. Paul Hillman saw his stick launch into the air after he tried a backstick shot on goal, his stick falling harmlessly into no mans land (see image above). The resultant mishit saw the ball bounce and bobble towards goal, the pace obviously deceiving the Uni keeper who had a swing and a miss with his kicker. The clearance off the line was a soft panicked one, but Lightning showed calm and got the goal. Unfortunately despite many attemps, the guys were unable to bag a second, and Uni managed to sneak one in the second period to snatch a 1-1 draw. 3rd Grade played next against Maitland, and the team led 3-0 at halftime thanks to a PC conversion from Paul Baxter (moving to 12 goals for the season), a simple tap in by Chris Southall saw the teams second, before Chris's pass at the top of the D was deflected back into his path to setup an open goal opportunity which he took. Chris is banging in the goals in 3rd Grade, his role as a part time winger flourishing with 9 goals to his credit now. Maitland managed to sneak a goal in along the backline, but when Scott Rainbow squeezed a shot in after Todds PC flick was deflected, it was game over. Solid work once again by the defensive pairing of Todd Denholm and Justin Rainbow, ensuring the teams record as the tightest defence in the comp remains in tact. The win sees Port sitting second, 1 point behind Souths, with both teams playing each other this weekend. 4th Grade closed out the day in wet conditions. The team was creating chances but couldnt convert, and then in a horrid last 7 minutes to the 1st half, conceeded 2 goals to trail at the break. A halftime chat by club coach Baxter inspired the lads to work a little bit harder, and it paid dividends with Scott bagging a double to get the team back on level terms. They were Scotts 8th and 9th strikes for the season in this grade. The team had a few chances late to snatch a win, but Maitlands defence was equally up for the task and it ended 2-2. The result sees the team sitting in 4th place on goal difference. solid performances by the 'old blokes' in the squad, with Scott, Karl, Nik and George all performing well this week. |
