Unbeaten weekend
Tuesday, 06 July 2010 09:26

Well the Hornets had another unbeaten weekend in the NMHA competition. But the Presidents Keg remains safe again as all 3 teams failed to secure maximum points. but a good weekend none the less.

6th Grade started the day against University, looking to continue thier recent run of good form. It began well when 'White Lightning' Keith scored his 9th of the season. He was able to slot home a nice shot after some comical lead up work. Paul Hillman saw his stick launch into the air after he tried a backstick shot on goal, his stick falling harmlessly into no mans land (see image above). The resultant mishit saw the ball bounce and bobble towards goal, the pace obviously deceiving the Uni keeper who had a swing and a miss with his kicker. The clearance off the line was a soft panicked one, but Lightning showed calm and got the goal. Unfortunately despite many attemps, the guys were unable to bag a second, and Uni managed to sneak one in the second period to snatch a 1-1 draw.

3rd Grade played next against Maitland, and the team led 3-0 at halftime thanks to a PC conversion from Paul Baxter (moving to 12 goals for the season), a simple tap in by Chris Southall saw the teams second, before Chris's pass at the top of the D was deflected back into his path to setup an open goal opportunity which he took. Chris is banging in the goals in 3rd Grade, his role as a part time winger flourishing with 9 goals to his credit now. Maitland managed to sneak a goal in along the backline, but when Scott Rainbow squeezed a shot in after Todds PC flick was deflected, it was game over. Solid work once again by the defensive pairing of Todd Denholm and Justin Rainbow, ensuring the teams record as the tightest defence in the comp remains in tact. The win sees Port sitting second, 1 point behind Souths, with both teams playing each other this weekend.

4th Grade closed out the day in wet conditions. The team was creating chances but couldnt convert, and then in a horrid last 7 minutes to the 1st half, conceeded 2 goals to trail at the break. A halftime chat by club coach Baxter inspired the lads to work a little bit harder, and it paid dividends with Scott bagging a double to get the team back on level terms. They were Scotts 8th and 9th strikes for the season in this grade. The team had a few chances late to snatch a win, but Maitlands defence was equally up for the task and it ended 2-2. The result sees the team sitting in 4th place on goal difference. solid performances by the 'old blokes' in the squad, with Scott, Karl, Nik and George all performing well this week.

Baby Hornets Strike

The Junior teams have had a successful raid on Maitlands competition with all 3 sides recording handy victories on Wednesday evening.

The U10 Cougars continued thier unbeaten run to the season with a solid 7-3 victory over Maitland Taxis. The Taxis team was short so Cougars players rotated across the team, allowing it to be a fair contest and ensuring all the Cougars players got solid game time. Coach Scott and assistant Paul both agreed that Luke and Will showed you dont need to be big to be good as the pint sized duo played some of thier best hockey of the season.

U10 Wildcats have turned thier season around, recording thier 3rd win in 4 games. 5-0 was the scoreline against Jellybeans. Coach Jason indicated the team has improved thier skills and intensity on the field and it is showing.

The U13's team came up against Joeys and played some awesome hockey to record a 4-0 victory. Taylor and Gabi were defensive rocks in the first half, ensuring the opposition had no shots on goal. Brandan scored the teams first with a lovely strike from the edge of the D before Deklan bagged a double and Brendan scored his second for the day. Chelsea played her best game of the season and Jayden came alive in goal late in the game, denying the opposition several times with some great goalkeeping.

All the players are having a great time and enjoying thier hockey. Training is on the first weekend and last of the school holidays, but no more games until 21st July. Have a safe holidays kids.

2 outta 3 aint bad

The weekend saw all 3 teams in action looking to continue thier recent good run of form.

Saturday the mighty 6th Grade were looking to go 4 in a row when they took on competition leaders Cardiff Wallies. Sadly the team couldnt find any answers to the Wallies midfield that over ran and outmuscled our guys. The lads had some opportunities though but just couldnt find a way into goal. Ross Hunter was inspirational, and he was well supported by the older guys in the team, namely Owen Salisbury and Ron Churchill, both working hard defensively.

4ths came into the weekend sitting in 7th spot, just 2 points out of 3rd and new a win would really give thier finals challenge a real boost. Up against University who had put 5 past the Hornets in the last meeting, the team started well with Chris Southalll bagging the teams first goal after just 5 minutes. Scott Rainbow convertted a PC to give the 2 goal lead before a lovely through ball from Scott saw Jeremy Nielson at full pace outrun the Uni defence and flick the ball beyond an outstretched keeper into the side netting for the 3rd goal. Uni came out hard in the second stanza and bagged a couple of goals but the lads held on for an excellent 3-2 win. Really good performances by Nik Thiele and Josh Stuart.

3rds were keen to notch a win over University and with Chris Southall off the bench to score the first and Paul Baxter bagging a double it was 3-0 at the break. Port couldnt find a goal in the 2nd half, but did conceed one against the run of play. 3-1 the game ended. Steve Hill and Grayden Hubbard played well.
